Eugenio “Gino” Ascolese, longtime Middletown resident and owner of Gino’s Motel and Market, died following a short illness on Sunday, November 2, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 85.
The son of the late Valentio and Raffaella Ascolese, he was born in San Valentino, Torino, Italy on October 5, 1929. He married Genoveffa Ruggerio on August 26, 1956 in Salerno, Italy and eventually settled in Middletown, NY in 1972. Together they ran Gino’s Luncheonette for 37 years until her death in 2009. He continued to work in his family business until recently, but with a broken heart after losing the love of his life, Genoveffa. Gino was a member of St. Joseph’s church in Middletown.
He is survived by his daughter, Raffael and his sons, Valentino, Anthony and Joseph; brother-in-law Alfonzo Ruggerio; sisters-in-law, Mary DeFillipis and Grace DiPalma; grandchildren; Vincent, Antonietta, Eugenio, Genevieve, Bianca, Juliana, Antonio and Lorenzo as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 pm on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, November 7, 2014 at St. Joseph’s roman Catholic Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Entombment will follow in the Ascolese family crypt at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 pm on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, November 7, 2014 at St. Joseph’s roman Catholic Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Entombment will follow in the Ascolese family crypt at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
