Obituary for Elizabeth Rita Matrafailo
Elizabeth “Rita” Matrafailo, age 81, died peacefully on January 28, 2023. On February 14, 1960, Rita married the love of her life, John Matrafailo. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage and raised a family together. Rita was a dedicated wife, mom, and extraordinary cookie baker. She also served as a bus driver for Washingtonville Central School District for many years. Her love for sea turtles inspired her to be part of South Carolina’s turtle research team, where she documented sea turtle nests. Rita and John opened their hearts and their homes, in both New York and South Carolina, to countless friends and neighbors. “Mrs. Matt” could always be counted on to provide snacks with a side order of saucy comments which showcased her generosity and her sense of humor.
Rita is survived by her children: John Matrafailo (Karen), Teresia Parker (Christopher), and JudyLee Matrafailo. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Haley Parker, Julia Johnson, Elise Johnson, Rachel Johnson, and Pauly Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Matrafailo.
A celebration of life service will take place at Faith Reformed Church, 11 S Centerville Rd, Slate Hill, NY on Sunday, February 5 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made Rita’s favorite sea turtle rescue and research organization: https://conserveturtles.org/
