Elinor Critelli, a registered nurse and longtime resident of Middletown, died after a lengthy illness at Middletown Park Manor on September 15, 2023 with her devoted family at bedside. She was 88.
The daughter of the late John and Gertrude Brown Fernanda, she was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on February 23, 1935.
She was a petite woman with a heart that was larger than life. Her talents, caring and generosity were extensions of her nursing career to family, neighbors and friends.
Christmas was a time when Elinor would bake cookies for family and friends; it was only in her later years that she announced that she would be paring down the batches of cookies to 50 dozen! From her usual amount.
Many people have benefitted not only from her culinary talents but her crafts as well.
She was an expert crochet and knitting artist who left us with baby outfits, blankets and ornaments to adorn our holiday decorations.
Elinor was a spiritual woman who has made a difference in our lives with her compassion, humility and love.
She is survived by her children; Robert and his wife Phyllis of Middletown, NY, Steven and his wife Susan of Tallahassee, Fl.,
and Karen Critelli of Genesee Depot, Wisconsin, a loving grandson, Anthony Critelli and his wife Megan of Rochester, NY and a first and only great-granddaughter, Isabella G. Critelli. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sandra Fernanda.
Elinor was predeceased by her husband of 61 years at the time of his death in 2016 and her brother Robert Fernanda.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from 4-7 pm at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Church of St. Joseph, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY with the Rev. Dennis Nikolic officiating.
