Eelco J. Visser, a longtime Slate Hill resident, died on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Orange Regional Medical Center, following a courageous battle with leukemia. He was 65.
The son of the late Henry and Antje Bokkinga Visser, he was born on October 4, 1948 in Leeuwarden, Holland. He proudly served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1970. He was part of the Helicopter squadron 8 and 4 on the USS Yorktown, which began his lifelong interest in aviation. Eelco married Teresa Pikul in 1968 in Florida, NY. Eelco was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Middletown.
A Communication Technician for Frontier Communications for over 40 years, he was a great family man who loved children and would do anything to help anyone in need. Eelco had a special fondness for animals, especially his granddogs: Winston and Thor. He was a great dad and was always happy. Eelco was diagnosed with leukemia several years ago and throughout this ordeal, he never lost his sense of humor, even up to his last days in the hospital.
He is survived by his loving wife, Teresa, at home; his daughter, Courtney of Slate Hill and his son, Scott Visser of North Myrtle Beach, SC; his brothers in-law: John Pikul, Frank Pikul (Gloria) and Marty Pikul; sisters-in-law: Kathy Mead (Larry), Claire Simmons (Herbert), Lucy Toper (Richard), Wanda, Elaine and Esther Pikul; cousins: Helen Faria (Tom), Wilma Ciliberto (Paul), John Palsma (Beatrice), and Tantje Grace; Sheila Palsma and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 9th, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10th, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial, with Military Honors ,will follow at Orange County Veterans Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY 10924.
