Obituary for Edward W. Novak, Sr.
Edward W. Novak, Sr. January 20, 1947-February 20, 2015

Middletown, NY

Edward W. Novak, Sr., a retired security Hospital Treatment Assistant and lifetime resident of Middletown died unexpectedly on February 20, 2015 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 68.

The third of four children born to William and Elna Petersen Novak, he was born on January 20, 1947 in Middletown. Ed was brought up in a family that believed in helping others through community service, he kept that tradition. He was a member of the first graduating class of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and remained in contact with many of his former classmates. He graduated from John S. Burke Catholic High School in 1965 and was involved in the 50th reunion committee. Ed was active for many years with the Cub and Boy Scouts, Midway Ambulance Corps, coached the Elks Junior bowling league and was a certified Red Cross CPR instructor. He proudly served in the US Air Force as an E2 during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, DAV, Past Commander of the American Legion Post 151 and the Knights of Columbus.

He and his wife Sally Austin were married in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on March 7, 1970 and would have celebrated 45 years together next month. They were a couple dedicated to each other, at times both working at Middletown Psychiatric Center and Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Center in New Hampton. Sally and Ed were life partners, and when Ed suffered a traumatic stroke in 2002, Sally made sure he was able to keep involved in the community. We are grateful for their dedication to each other and to their favored causes. Even though his stroke created some handicaps for him, it never diminished his great sense of humor, love of adventure and joy for life.

Ed is survived by his loving and dedicated wife and partner, Sally, his sons, Ed Novak, Jr. and Christopher Novak of Middletown; sister, Theresa Grabowski and her husband Ray of Middletown, brother-in-law, Ralph Austin and his wife Suzanne of Maine, sister-in-law, Carol Austin, 11 nieces and nephews, and foster brother Michael and foster sister, Michelle.

Ed was predeceased by his parents and his brother, William Novak, Jr. and nephew, Edward Storms.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
