EDWARD JOEL MEYER

June 7, 1941 - February 11, 2012

Middletown, NY

Edward J. Meyer, a distinguished attorney who practiced law in Orange County, NY for over 40 years, died Saturday night at his home. He was 70. He was a native of Brooklyn, NY and graduated from St. John's Law School in 1964. Following graduation in 1965, he became a Tax Fraud Attorney for the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1966, he helped pioneer the first Mental Health Information Services (MHIS) at Middletown State Hospital, advocating for the rights of the mentally ill. During that time, he was also the Executive Director of the Regional Economic Action Program (RECAP). In the 1970s, he worked as a County Legal Aid Attorney and became the Orange County District Attorney in the early 1980's. Ed continued his career as a Criminal Attorney and General Practitioner for the Law Officer of Meyer and Diesenhouse and other partners throughout the years. He was also a Professor of Criminal and Business Law at Orange County Community College for 37 years. In the 1980's, Ed also hosted a morning radio show for WGNY radio.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Susan P. Meyer of 47 years; and his three children, Lesley Dudzik-Andrews and Peter Kusminsky; Howard Meyer and Meredith Goldsmith; and Julie Meyer-Bilyou and her husband, Mickey Bilyou, who was like a son to him. Ed is also survived by his seven grandchildren whom he cherished most in life: Joshua, Jessica, Abigail, Emma, Danny, Noah and Sarah. He is also survived by his brother, Herbert and sister-in-law, Jill Meyer; sisters and brothers-in-law; Marcia and Stuart Schlissel, Alan and Lorraine Brause; and his many nieces and nephews whom he adored. He is also survived by a close family friend, Stephen Andrews. Ed was predeceased by his loving and caring parents, Theresa and Murray Meyer; nephew, Douglas Brause; and very close family friend and law secretary (for over 30 years), Marjorie Hanes.

Ed was a great athlete who enjoyed playing sports especially baseball, tennis, swimming, and bike riding with his children and grandchildren. He was also a piano and accordion player.

Burial will be private in the family plot. A public Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
