Obituary for Edward F. Miller
EDWARD F. MILLER
August 25, 1934 - January 6, 2019
Bullville, NY
Edward F. Miller, a retired Middletown High School teacher, died on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 84 years old.
The son of the late Rose De Leo Miller and Howard Miller, he was born on August 25, 1934 in Staten Island, New York. Ed married Rita Imperato on June 11, 1960 in Queens, NY. They moved to the Middletown area in 1964 from Maryland. They settled in Bullville in 1970 and were members of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church.
A family statement reads: “The world lost a good one today. Dad earned his wings. Dad was a life-long high school science teacher (and a volunteer fire fighter). He met Mom through love letters from a German army base and cherished his trips to Europe with her later in life. His garden rivalled Mr. McGregor’s. He built his first house. He was an amazing father to the boys and Beth. Chores were done in his old button-ups and he rarely went out without a sport coat. He was the most devout convert – St. Paul’s every Sunday (and volunteered many other days). He hosted the annual Thanksgiving family feast and never let anyone do the dishes. He was a man of few words, but when he talked everyone listened – and his soft laugh melted your heart. He had his favorite seat on the couch, next to Mom, serving her tea on a tray every night. He watched the local news religiously. He was a prolific reader of picture books to his grand and great-grandkids. And he loved his bride of 58+ years, Rita. Say hello to Uncle Herb, Uncle Joe and Aunt Alice for us. We will miss you, Dad”
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita at home; five children; Beth Haupt of Warwick, RI; Tom Miller and his companion, Marta of Otisville, New York; Edward Miller and his companion, Amparo Trunick of Annapolis, MD;. John Miller and his wife, Beth Miller of Perrysburg, OH and David Miller and his wife, Carrie Miller of Seattle; and his siblings: Richard Miller and wife, Maureen Miller of Wilmington, DE and Howardine Miller of Pawley, PA. He is also survived by his 13 grandchildren; Aimee Haupt and her companion, Jack Bullock, Alycia Kelsey and her husband, Dan, Christian Haupt, Kate Stap and her husband, Joe, Tom Miller and his companion, Sharon, Emily, Christina, Jack, Sam, Katelyn, Abby, Grace, and Michael Miller, and three great-grandchildren Blake, Rachael and Colton, as well as many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Herbert Miller.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
