Edmund J. Guertin, a retired Middletown High School teacher and longtime resident, died at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 98.

The son of the late Frank and Annie Cormier Guertin, he was born on May 10, 1914 in Leominster, MA. Edmund proudly served  his country in the US Navy during World War II. He married Theresa Gagnier on September 25, 1943. They moved to the Middletown area in 1957 from Manlius, NY, where he taught at the military academy. Edmund was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church in Middletown. He taught Adult Religious Instruction and served as a Lector and Leader of  Song.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post 151.

Edmund’s family and friends will remember him as a true intellectual whose love of learning and language continued to the end. A dedicated foreign language teacher for many years, he was a man who remained humble about his many abilities. He was deeply devout and lived his spirituality.  He possessed sterling integrity and character. Most significantly, he will be remembered as a devoted, loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his children; three sons, Edmund J. Guertin, Jr of San Pedro, CA, Lawrence J. Guertin of Stewartstown, PA, and Richard J. Guertin of Middletown; three daughters, Madeleine M. Carlson of Phoenixville, PA, Jeannine M. Guertin of Middletown and Frances M. Guertin Johnson of Valatie, NY; thirteen grandchildren, Ren, Matthew, Rebecca, Sara, Elizabeth, Kathleen, Adrienne, Stephanie, Renée, Matthew, Michael, Laura and Andrew and six great-grandchildren, Austynn Marie, James, Lucas, Gloria, David and Michelle.

Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Resurrection  will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown. Pastor Dennis Nikolic will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
