On Friday, April 21, 2023, beloved husband, father and friend, Douglas F. Harkins, died unexpectedly following a short illness at Garnet Medical Center. He was 75.
Douglas was born on July 15, 1947 in the Bronx to Thomas E. and Dorothy A. Ryan Harkins. Doug grew up in Glen Oaks, Queens and lived a life dedicated to service. He entered the US Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned 3 Bronze Stars. Very soon after being honorably discharged from the service, he married his life partner, Veronica Del Giorno on October 25, 1969 in Valley Stream, Long Island. In 1973, Veronica and Doug moved to the Johnson area to raise their family together.
Doug continued his service as a NYC Fire fighter for 33 years, committing to save homes and lives of others whenever possible. After the 911 attacks in 2001, Doug worked tirelessly at the site in the rescue and restoration efforts. He was a member of the Red Nose Hunting Camp, He was a strong and humble husband and father who was always there to anchor his family.
In addition to his loving wife Veronica at home, he is survived by his two children, son Douglas J. Harkins and his wife Sunghye and daughter Jeannine A. Ward; one brother, Thomas E. Harkins and his wife Arlene and grandchildren Matthew and Ashley Ward as well as two nieces, Kate and Kristine and one nephew Steven.
Cremation was private. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am on May 11, 2023 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow with Military honors at Orange County Veterans Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY 10924.
