David L. Cole, Jr. of New Hampton, died on Sunday November 1 at home. He was 80.

The son of the late Mildred Scott Writer and David Leslie Cole, Sr., he was born on June 8, 1929 in Middletown. He graduated from SUNY Delhi in 1950, with a degree in Agriculture. On June 6, 1950, David became a charter member of the Wawayanda Volunteer Fire Dept. On September 17 of that same year, he married Mildred J. Howell at Ridgebury Presbyterian Church.

Along with his wife, he operated two farms in Slate Hill, Cole's Poultry Farm and Cedar Hill Farm. With separate areas of expertise, he was known as the "Egg man" and Mildred was the "Cow lady". During his lifetime, David was a member of the NYS Hereford Association and the N.Y. Farm Bureau. He was a certified DHI milk tester for many years. He also drove school buses and ambulances for Horton Hospital over the years, and worked for Borden Creamery in both Johnson and Washingtonville. David was an avid train enthusiast involving both the Middletown/ NJ and Erie systems.

A proud founding member of the Wawayanda Volunteer Fire Dept., he served as Fire Chief from 1969-72. David was a NYS Fire Worden since 1946 and a fire commissioner for 9 years.

He is survived by his three children, Susan Babb and her husband Lyle, Linda Christman and her husband Martin, and David S. Cole and his wife Cathy, all of New Hampton; sister Marion Green of Bonaire, GA; three grandchildren, Gregory Alex Babb and his wife Danielle, Justin Edgar Babb and Robert Daniel Skinner and longtime friend and companion, Gladys Raymond.

He was predeceased by his wife Mildred J. Cole in 1992 and his brother, William S. Cole in June of this year. 

Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Firematic service will be held at 7:15 at the funeral home on Wednesday evening. A Funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 at 11 am at the funeral home, Rev. Jeffrey Farley will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in Ridgebury Cemetery, Ridgebury Road, Slate Hill, NY.

Memorial contributions in David's honor may be made to Wawayanda Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 1, Slate Hill, NY 10973.
