Daniel J. Carlstrom, a retired firefighter for U.S. Military Academy at West Point, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 24, 2012 at Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. He was 57.
The son of John J. Carlstrom and the late Marie Jachmann Carlstrom, he was born on September 27, 1954 in Newburgh. Dan graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1972 then proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1973-77. He married Karen Buttafuoco on July 25, 1982 in Warwick and they raised two sons together.
Dan was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Middletown. In addition to his work as a firefighter, he also served his community as a 911 dispatcher. Dan was home grown for firematics. He had a great personality and was loved by all who met him. his best friends were his spouse, his sons and his family (both his true relatives and his firematic family). He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his by the book style and his fairness in any situation. He was also an avid Mets fan his whole life.
In addition to his loving wife Karen at home, he is survived by his beloved sons, First Lieutenant Gregory of Fort Bragg, NC and Michael at home; his father John "Jack" Carlstrom of Newburgh; one brother, Joseph of Shalimar, FL; Theresa "Terry" Cramer and her husband Rick of Newburgh; mother and father-in-law, Joseph and Janet Buttafuoco; brother-in-law Joseph A. Buttafuoco, Jr; sisters-in-law, Lori DeGeorge and Lisa Jackson and her husband Robert; and eight nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his Mom and his brother-in-law, Frank W. George.
Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, August 28 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Wednesday, August 29th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Monsignor John Budwick, a close family friend, will celebrate the Mass. Burial with Military honors will follow in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery, Middletown.Â
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, August 28th at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Wednesday, August 29th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY.
Burial with Military honors will follow in Wallkill Cemetery.
