Dr. Daniel F. Sickmiller, respected local veterinarian, died on Thursday, November 15 at home with loving family at his side. He was 76.
The son of the late John and Theresa Pointner Sickmiller, he was born on October 15, 1936 in Callicoon, NY. He graduated from Jeffersonville High School and earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Cornell University.Â
Raised on a farm in Jeffersonville, NY, he found his calling in caring for animals. His work was love made visible. Dr. Sickmiller was a healer of body and sad hearts and his creed, "Do no harm," was woven throughout every aspect of his life. Beyond his vast medical knowledge and skill, and his love of and dedication to the true art of veterinary medical practice, his magic lay in an innate instinct of what his patients needed. Above all he had a heart with infinite capacity for compassion and acceptance.
Dan gave generously of himself and graciously shared his wisdom with people from all walks of life. With great empathy, he was a true friend to many. He enjoyed caring for hard luck cases on his own farm, traveling with his family, shopping for and preparing home-cooked meals, fishing with his grandsons at the lake upstate, hunting with his childhood friends at Buck Ridge Camp and competing in local tractor-pull contests.Â
He is survived by his wife, Beth, at home; two sons, Rick with his wife Peggy (Boutin) of Naples, FL and Craig with his fiancée Sara Budd of Middletown; and two daughters, Kellie Brooks of Camden, ME and Cara (Brooks) Abraham with her husband Michael of Roxbury, CT. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Herbstsomer, East Brunswick, NJ and his beloved grandchildren, Matthew, C.J., Wyl, and Darya.
Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers donations in Dan's memory may be made to the Sullivan County S.P.C.A. 104 Rock Hill Drive Rock Hill, NY 12775.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 19 from 6 to 8 pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown,NY, 10940. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
