Chester Kurpiel, a longtime Middletown resident and recently of Florida, NY, died on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at his home. He was 93.
The son of the late Nicholas and Sophie Nowak Kurpiel, he was born on February 14, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY. Chet married Cecelia Ann Enright on May 17, 1952 at St. Joseph’s Church in Middletown, NY. Chet and Cecelia shared 48 years of marriage together before her death on October 10, 2000. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an aircraft mechanic during World War II and worked as a Vocational Supervisor for Woodbourne Rehabilitation Center.
Following Cecelia’s death, he married Maureen Janzten, the widow of his friend Ted, and they shared 13 years of marriage. Maureen also predeceased Chet in February of this year.
Chet is survived by his loving sons, Daniel of Middletown and Chet Kurpiel, Jr and his wife Maureen Daly of Roslindale, MA; his sister, Genevive Cohen; several nieces and nephews, and his grandchildren, Sarah Kurpiel-Lee and Shauna Daly and his great-grandchildren Colin and Catherine. He is also survived by Maureen’s sons and their spouses and partners, Ronald Janzten and his life partner Marjorie Brian of Sherborn, MA, Robert and his wife Ani of Radnor, PA, Donald and his wife Damaris of Hackettstown, NJ, and Daniel Janzten and his wife Deborah of Etna, NH; and their children, Natalie, Audrey, Luke, and Avalynn. The family also wishes to acknowledge Tamar Tabatadze, Maureen and Chet’s longtime caregiver, who allowed them to stay comfortably at home until their passings.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Thursday, November 2, at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow in the Kurpiel family plot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Middletown, NY.
