Middletown, NY

Charlie Sauer, a resident of Middletown for over 5 years and formerly of New Milford, NJ, died on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 89.

The son of Frederick and Sophia Klinkenberg Sauer, he was born on March 12, 1925 in Odenkirchen, Germany. He married Theresa Elinor Feitler, the love of his life, in April 1946 in the Bronx. Ellie and Charlie shared 65 years of marriage together until her death in 2011.

Charlie proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the Battle of the Bulge, Pattons Third Army and 105 Field Artillery Battalion. His military career was always important to him and Charlie was fortunate to have received the Honor Flight to Washington, DC a few years ago. He worked on the VFW Credentials Committee, served as Commander of VFW Post 4290 in New Milford, NJ and was Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade for New Milford, NJ at one time. He and his wife Ellie were also members of Church of the Ascension in New Milford before they relocated to NY.

Charlie worked for over 61 years for Goodwill Publishing and loved every minute of it. He worked up until the last moment, withhis cell phone and laptop always near by.

After relocating to Middletown, NY, Charlie became a member of the Mulberry Seniors, the Players Club of the Mulberry Seniors and was recently elected President of the Mulberry Seniors.

Charlie will be remembered by everyone for his charming smile, outgoing style and humor. He loved spending time with his family, especially his great-grandchildren. He was a lifetime die-hard Giants fan who attended all of their home games until recently.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, April Haas and her husband Bill of Middletown; his grandchildren Lacey Vasti and her husband John of Yalaha, FL and Mark Haas and his wife Marcie of Forty Fort, PA and his cherished great-grandchildren, Michaela and Maddox Haas.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 pm on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am at the Church of the Ascension in New Milford, NJ. Burial with Military honors will follow in the family plot in Hackensack Cemetery, Hackensack, NJ.
