CHARLES W. MAYER

Middletown, NYCharles W. Mayer, retired District Music Chairman for District 13 in Valley Stream who taught at Wheeler Avenue School for 35 years, died following a long illness at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh. He was 88.
The son of the late Charles and Isabel Cunningham Mayer, he was born on March 30, 1925 in Valley Stream, NY. Charles served as a Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.He married Mary Emily Livingston on July 15, 1950. He loved teaching and was a gifted instructor. He enjoyed teaching on the Elementary level and taught both at school and at his private trombone studio. He liked being a part of his teaching community, surrounding himself with other gifted teachers.He retired to the Middletown area with his wife in 1991 and became a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was active in church activities for his entire life, beginning as a choir member at Grace United Methodist Church in Valley Stream at the age of 17. The beloved patriarch of an adoring family, Charles will be remembered as a warm, friendly, old-fashioned man. He was elegant, polite and held strong to his values.
In addition to his beloved wife, Mary Emily, he is survived by his son, Charles D. Mayer and his wife, Holly of New York, NY; three daughters: Anna Leibenhaut and her husband, David of Valley Stream, Kathryn Bates and her husband, David of Elmira and Laurie Hulle and her husband, Larry of Slate Hill. He is also survived by his twin sister, Ruth Kmetz of Bellmore, NY and twelve grandchildren: Amanda, Samuel, Jonathan, Bryan, Daniel, Joseph, Emily, Andrew, Patrick, Michael, Thomas and Sarah. He was predeceased by his siblings: Dorothy Baldauf, Robert Mayer, Mildred Mayer and Joan Reuter.
Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 26th at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 28th at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Pine Lawn, NY. Burial with Military honors will follow at Pine Lawn Cemetery.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 58 West Main Street, Middletown, NY. Rev. Bill Wolf will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Charles' name may be made to either Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550 or to his church, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 58 West Main Stree, Middletown, NY 10940.
