Obituary for Charles A Perrenod, Jr.
Charles Albert (Chuck) Perrenod – Sailor, Sports Enthusiast, Farmer, Manufacturer – Loyal to both Friends and Family
Charles Albert Perrenod, Jr. (Chuck) of Liberty, New York, passed away suddenly on May 27 at the age of 73. Chuck was born in Long Island City, Queens on June 17, 1946 to Charles Albert Perrenod (deceased) and Frances Perrenod (deceased). He graduated from the New York Military Academy (NYMA) in 1965, and St. John’s University, Class of 1969.
Chuck’s father manufactured specialized miniature light bulbs – including one for the Norden bombsight used during and after WW II. Chuck entered the family business after college. By then, in addition to industrial bulbs, the firm was manufacturing a specialized bulb essential to positioning the GOES satellites. They also manufactured a precision bulb that was used in aircraft mounted missile guidance.
A few years later, Chuck’s father purchased an egg farm in Liberty, NY, housing 100,000 chickens, and Chuck switched careers. He learned all about farming from scratch, eventually expanded into beef cattle, and came to love living in Liberty. When the economics of egg production became depressed, he innovated by selling directly to stores and to the general public in New York City, bypassing the intermediaries.
Later in life, Chuck returned to the light bulb manufacturing business in Long Island City, while continuing to run the family farm in Liberty. After his father passed away, he relocated the business to Liberty and renamed it Sol-Rex Miniature Lamp Works.
He always felt at home in Long Island City, and spent many memorable evenings at Manducatis Restaurant, with owners and dear friends, Ida and Vincent Cerbone, and family. He often supplied their restaurant with firewood and pork from the farm.
Chuck really loved good food, and always looked forward to the yearly Feast of the Seven Fishes, hosted by Bobby Barbarite and his wife Lynn. He also enjoyed their festive holiday meals, and the annual Kelly Family Reunion.
Chuck was an avid and skillful sailor, and was a member of the Sag Harbor Yacht Club for 41 years. He often sailed his 30 foot catamaran all the way from Long Island to Bradenton, Florida, taking it South in the Fall, and then back in the Spring.
Chuck sponsored his close childhood friend Bruce MacInnes in the Formula 4 auto racing circuit. It was the toughest, most competitive class, and they dominated it. It was the beginning of Bruce’s 50 year career in auto racing and training. Chuck loved sports, playing tennis with the Catskills Avid Tennis Stars, as well as golfing with the Tuesday Night Mixed League at the Town of Wallkill Golf Course.
He enjoyed playing bridge, and spent many evenings with the Hudson Valley Contract Bridge Association. It was there, in 2002, that Chuck met his lovely life partner, Debbie, via Roz Rubenstein, a matchmaking member of the club.
Chuck was fortunate to be warmly welcomed into the Stark family: Debbie’s sister Irene, her husband Barry, their daughters Jaclyn and Marlee, and their son Joshua. They vacationed together, welcomed him to their house in Florida, explored New York City restaurants, and enjoyed its theaters.
Chuck leaves behind a large loving family, and many friends, who will miss him dearly: his partner Deborah Woronoff, her daughter Allison Berger (spouse: Jonathan), and their children Kaylee and Ryan; his former wife Judith Perrenod and their three children Jessica Maier (spouse: Steve), Rebecca Perrenod, and Charles (Cully) Perrenod (spouse: Stacy); his three foster children Johnny Glinski, Karen Norris Hayes, and Jeffrey Jefferson; his four grandchildren James Fleck, Andrew Maier, Evan Perrenod, and Brett Perrenod; his nephews Ari Klingman, and Michael and Paul Mamakos, his nieces Gabrielle Ravina, Lara Lee, and Yvette Reyes, and siblings Anette Klingman Ezold (spouse: Ed), and Yvette Ravina (spouse: Louis). He is survived by many wonderful friends including Bobby Barbarite, Frank Cuttita, Jeff Donaldson, Verne Gridley, Anthony Cerbone, Cathy Lombardi, Mike Nealis, Edgar Fiallos, and Bruce MacInnes. Chuck was loyal to a fault and touched the lives of many who now mourn this sudden loss.
