Obituary for Catherine Cronin
Catherine Cronin
August 8, 1926-November 29, 2018
Middletown, NY
Our Mother, Catherine Cronin of Middletown, NY entered into eternal rest on November 29, 2018. She was 92. She passed away in the comfort of her own home with both her daughter and son present. The daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine Callan, she was born on August 8, 1926 in Drumlandrick-Castleblayney, County Monaghan, Ireland. In addition to her husband, Patrick J Cronin she was predeceased by 8 brothers and sisters including her twin brother James. Surviving Mom are her daughter Elizabeth (Betty) at home, her son John and his wife Beth of Middletown, NY, her granddaughter Kaitlyn, also of Middletown and her brother Thomas of Drumlandrick-Castleblayney, County Monaghan, Ireland. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Like many immigrants from the “old sod,” Mom came over to New York City from Ireland at a young age and immediately went to work, saving and sending money home to help her family. Mom made a life-changing visit home to see her family and it was on-board that ship headed to Ireland that she met Dad. He was heading home as well, not intending to return as he had saved up enough money to buy a farm and live there. Having met Mom, those plans changed and the rest… Is her history! After having worked for a number of years in NYC, Mom and Dad moved up here in 1959. Immediately recognizable for her bright red-orange hair, Mom was a fixture in the Middletown area for the next almost 60 years.
The Catholic religion was a very important part of Mom’s life and she was a faithful member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She supported both the church and the school, volunteering over the years at events, fund-raisers and various other functions. She was also a proud, founding member of the Middletown Irish American Society. Up until the last couple of years, Mom proudly marched or rode in the Orange County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade even serving as an Aide to the Grand Marshall a number of years back. Mom retained her Irish citizenship throughout her life, but she was as proud of an American as anyone could be.
Mom’s life was one of generosity, love, sacrifice and service to and for her family. Mom loved nothing more than taking care of and being surrounded by those she loved. Mom had boundless energy and even up until the past few years, it was hard for people half her age to keep up with her. Although she will be missed greatly by family and friends, we know that she has reached her eternal reward in heaven with Dad and the rest of her family and friends. Thanks for a lifetime of caring Mom!
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
