New Vernon, NY

Carol Mae Mielke, a lifetime area resident and owner of New Vernon Florist, died on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. She was 80 years old.

One of six children born to William and Ethel Mayfield Magar, she entered our world on December 12, 1933 in Middletown, NY. She and her high school Sweetheart, William Mielke, would both graduate from Middletown High School Class of ’52 and would marry years later on July 28, 1954 in Holy Name of Jesus Church in Otisville.

They had six children and operated the family business in New Vernon. They grew many of the flowers they sold and had a reputation for being hard workers’ and providing beautiful, quality home grown plants. Carol kept the books , took the orders and made it possible for them to continue their family business for over 60 yrs, She delighted in staying involved in her children’s activities, served on the PTA and worked on the committee for her own class reunions .She was a dedicated wife, mom, grandmother and friend. You could always count on Carol to do any thing that was needed. She will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her children , David Thomas and his wife, Kathleen in Clayton, N.Y.,Susan Kirby and her husband David, in Zionsville, Pa., William Jr. and his wife, Pam in Marathon, N.Y., Arlene Kowalczik and her husband Mark in Middletown, Gerald and his wife, Gina in Otisville and Robert in Middletown. She is also survived by her brothers, Edward Magar and his wife Virginia in Middletown, Kenneth Magar and his wife in Sloatsburg, N.Y. and sisters Joyce Stavale and husband Anthony in Rohnert Pk. Cal. , Kaye Korby in Minn. And bro in law, Paul Mielke in Fla. Carol was blessed with many grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren that added much joy to her life.

Besides her husband Bill who died last year, she is predeceased by her sister Jean.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Ave. Middletown, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 16 at 11 am at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Otisville with Fr. Michael Palazzo officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Applebee- McPhiilips Funeral Home, Inc. www applebee-mcphillips .com

Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Ave. Middletown, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 16 at 11 am at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Otisville with Fr. Michael Palazzo officiating. Burial will take place in the family plot in Holy Name Cemetery following cremation at the convenience of the family.
