Obituary for Carmen Edith Rojas

Carmen Edith Rojas passed away on September 24th, 2022 in her beloved home in Goshen, NY. She was 72.

Carmen was born on November 26th, 1949 in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico to her beloved parents Hernan and Isabel Cruz who preceded her in death. At the age of two, Carmen and her family moved from Puerto Rico to Bronx, NY where she completed her education. She worked as a clerk at Saint Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, NY. In 1970, Carmen married the love of her life, Carlos Rojas and was married for 52 years. As witty as her beloved husband was and is, she matched him word for word. She was a committed wife, wonderful mother to her daughters, Veronica Oquendo and Melissa Rivera, and cherished grandmother to her two biological grandsons, Lionel Alexander and Julian Oquendo, and her adopted grandson, Kevin Horan. To her daughters, she imparted love, faith and strength, three of her most defining characteristics.

To her friends and the rest of her family, Carman was sister, titi (aunt), cousin or just the life of the party. Her smile was contagious and brilliant, and she absolutely lit up the room. Along with her generous husband, Carmen loved hosting people in her home and was an excellent cook. She gave of her food, but mostly she gave of herself; her spunk, her jokes, her laughs, her dancing, her heart, her life. Everywhere she went, she was quick to befriend others and was extremely charming. That's who she was, someone who quickly gave of her heart. Like Carlos, she also gave material things, whether it was a gift, or financial blessing to whoever was in need.

To her family, Carmen was a fierce warrior to the very end, having struggled for many years with illness. But even until her last days, her joy and zest for life, always shone through with a little dance and a big smile. She will live on forever in the hearts of all that had the pleasure to know her and love her.

Carmen is survived by her cherished husband Carlos Rojas, her daughters and son's-in-law Veronica (Lionel) Oquendo and Melissa (Eric) Rivera, her beloved sister and brother-in-law Minerva (Rafael) Sanchez and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home located at 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
