Middetown, NY Blake  Muthig, former NY State Police Commander, of Middetown, died on Sunday April 1 at Valley Hospital, in Ridgewood, NJ.  He was 78.

The son of the late Jerome and Nellie Grant Muthig, he was born on October 5, 1928 in Neversink, NY. Blake married June F. Tompkins on December 15, 1950.

Blake was a graduate of Liberty High School, and later the NYS Police Basic School. Blake began his lustrous career on August 1, 1950 at Troop C Headquarters in Sidney,  NY.  Blake was promoted to the ranks of Corporal, Sergeant and Zone Sergeant. He then became First Sargeant of Troop K, and when Troop F was established, Blake was named First Sargeant  at its new Headquarters in Middletown.  Blake was then promoted to the rank of  Lieutenant and returned to Troop C before returning to Troop F as the Zone Commander at Monroe.   Blake was again promoted, this time to the rank of Captain,  and served in both Troops K and F. Prior to his retirement in 1983, he had served as Major and Troop Commander of Troops C and B ( Sidney and Raybrook).

Following his retirement from law enforcement, Blake worked for A. Servidone, Inc of Castleton, NY, in highway and bridge construction and mining operations.

A family statement reads, “Through his life's dedication to law enforcement, Blake instilled his family with discipline and his hard working ethics. He was an inspiration to us all. He loved his family, and work and took great pride in making a difference in people’s lives".

Blake is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, June, at home, one son, Blake A. Muthig of Middletown, three daughters, Monty Kay Camp and her husband James of Griswold, CT, Terry Lee Muthig-Seekamp of Middletown, and Lyal June Gillen and her husband James of Middletown, DE, three brothers, Harold and his wife, Beverly of Turnwood, NY, Raymond and his wife, Dorothy, and Paul and his wife Cheryl, all of Parksville, two sisters, Annette Brown of Newburgh, and Hazel Raflowitz of Miami, Fl.     He has 12 grandchildren, Ross, Jesse, Travis, Tyler, Lee, Blake J., Carly, Michael, Kristine, Kimberly, Kacie Lee, and Blake and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Savanna. 

He is predeceased by his brothers Grant, Clyde and Calvin and his sisters Mildred Huggins, Doris Coon and Fern Mussino.  

Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 2 pm at the Ottaway Arboretum, Thomas Bull Memorial Park, Rt. 416, Montgomery, NY, 12549 (use the Grove Street Entrance). For further directions, please go to

 The NY State Police Chaplin will officiate.  Interment will be in Grahamsville Cemetery, Grahamsville, NY.
