It is with a heavy heart; that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and sister, Bertha Zwickel. She passed away; at the age of 90, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, May 18th. The daughter of Huibert and Berta Versnel-she was a long-time resident of Bloomingburg, New York.
Bertha treasured her upbringing on a chicken farm in Toms River, New Jersey, where she created many happy memories. She married her high school sweetheart, Herbert Zwickel, in 1951, and they remained inseparable until her passing. She worked as a nurse for 50 years, specializing in the NICU and holding various roles in different locations.
She was a faithful missionary, who shared her love for Jesus, and what He did for her with everyone she met. She had a hymn and a Bible verse in her heart; at all times. Her love for gardening, traveling, singing, and reading the Bible brought her immense joy, and her humble and kind personality touched the lives of many. Mom, we love you, and you will forever be in our hearts. We look forward; to reuniting with you in Heaven someday.
Bertha is survived; by her husband Herbert Zwickel; siblings Herman Versnel and Emmy (William) MacNichol; and children Kenneth (Joanne) Zwickel, Kathleen O'Neill, and Cynthia (Mark) Caban. She leaves behind ten grandchildren, Angela Zwickel, Joshua Zwickel, Danielle Zwickel, Jessica Petersheim, Christopher O'Neill, Matthew O'Neill, Katrina Caban, Zachary Caban, Jacqueline Caban, and Isabella Caban, as well as thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Bertha was pre-deceased; by her son, Daniel Zwickel, and brother, John (Betty) Versnel.
