Beatrice Byrd Harris, a long time resident of Highland Rehabilitation & Nursing (formerly St. Teresa’s Nursing & Rehab Center), passed away peacefully on Saturday 14, 2013 at Highland Rehab, Middletown, NY. She was 105 years old.
The daughter, of Sarah Johnson and John Henry Byrd, was born on August 15, 1908 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was the wife of James Harris, who pre-deceased her on May 27, 1983. Mrs. Harris began her career as an Elementary Teacher in the State of Virginia and completed her career as a Special Education Teacher for the State of New York until her retirement. She was also a longstanding member of St. Paul Baptist Church, the NAACP and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
She will be remembered for her intense love of and dedication to teaching, to travel, and of her fierce determination and spirit.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Marjorie K. Horne of Denver, CO, grandson Jon Horne and his wife, Gunhild, great-grandchildren Kyra and John Horne, of western New York state. She is further survived by family members the Rev. Dorothy Manley, Elaine, Lisa and Anthony Manley; nieces and nephews Evelyn and Merlyn Hooker of Fremont, CA, Louise Sass, Norwalk, CT, Robert Harris and his wife Olga of Yellow Springs, OH, James and Kathy Byrd of Willingboro, NJ, and devoted Middletown friends Suzanne Holladay and Queen Haddad and other friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, 94-96 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY, Telephone 845-343-0082.
