Barbara J. Clark, of Middletown, NY, passed away quietly while resting in her chair at Garnet Health Medical Center on
19 November 2022. She was 74 years old.
The daughter of George A. Schoeberlein and Ruth (Sampson) Schoeberlein, she was born and raised in St. Lawrence County until the age of eleven, when the family moved to the Albany area. They settled in Castleton-on-Hudson, where Barbara graduated from Maple Hill High School in 1966; did her freshman year at University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA.
and then returned to the Albany area, where she graduated with honors from SUNY Albany in 1971.
She pursued a career as a civil servant, working mostly for the Office of Mental Health in the Patient Resource Office at MIddletown Psychiatric Center. After several years of supervising the Middletown Office as Senior Agent, she transferred to the Labor Department, where she finished her career as a Labor Services Representative, helping unemployed people get jobs.
Barbara Is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles R. Clark, Jr.; her sister and husband, a niece and two nephews; a cousin and other
relatives of her mother in Washington State; her sister-in-law and husband and two nieces.
.
Barbara was an animal lover, especially of cats. She was fond of saying "I’ve had cats all my life.” She was a life member of the Middletown Humane Society and worked on the annual yard sales and later in the rabies clinics.
She was always looking out for people to help, also. She joined the Denton Presbyterian Church and served in the food
pantry, with the Junior Youth Group and was on the Scholarship committee. She also volunteered for a time with the Guild of St. Margaret soup kitchen.
Barbara was happiest on her New York State jobs when she could find an income benefit for an indigent patient in Middletown Psychiatric Center or find a job for an unemployed person. Barbara was always curious and always wanted to know and see more.
She was the sparkplug for our trip to Yugoslavia, and especially Sarajevo, because it was a meeting-place of cultures and religions.
While she was working for the Patient Resource Office, she earned a Masters degree in Health Systems Administration from a New School extension program.
When she was feeling healthy, she always wanted to go to see something interesting, like Stonehenge, or Native American mounds in Ohio.
Barbara was always moved by the beauty of cats, birds, clouds, and autumn leaves. In her last days, she was constantly commenting, during trips to various doctors' offices, on the beauty of the leaves this year, even after they were past peak. Several times, she commented on the beauty of the clouds she could see from her hospital room.
