Atilano Villar Pinero, recently of Middletown and originally of Brooklyn, NY, died on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Middletown Park. He was 86.
The son of the late Atilano Villar and Laura De La Cruz Pinero, he was born on August 8, 1926 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Atilano served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and spent his lifetime working on the sea. He was Chief Deck Stewart for the Grace Line of Cruise ships until his retirement. On April 5, 1952, he married Raquel Vazquez in Manhattan. He was an independent man of strong character. Atilano was a real people person who enjoyed talking to and being around people. One of his favorite pasttimes was restoring tube radios. He also loved his food and cars. His family will remember him as a hardworker who always remained brave, and fought until the end. He was an honorable man whose word was good.
In addition to his loving wife of 61 years, Raquel at home; he is survived by his sons, Peter Villar and his wife Patricia of Middletown and Atilano, Jr and his wife Delilah of Montebello; one daughter, Bernadette Murphy and her husband Martin of Middletown. He is also survived by one sister, Haydee Villar-Pinero of Puerto Rico; four grandchildren, Patricia and her husband Andrew, Christopher, Kristina and her husband Jason, and Lauren; and three great-grandchildren, Nicolas, Emma and Garner.
Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Friday, July 12, 2013 and from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Saturday, July13 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY, 10940. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Cremation will be private.
