Obituary for Arthur Nelson Wilcox, Jr.
Arthur Nelson Wilcox, Jr. a lifetime Middletown resident, died following a short illness on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 surrounded by his loving family at Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown, NY. He was 68.
The eldest son of Shirley Eherts Wilcox and the late Arthur Nelson Wilcox, Sr., he was born on January 15, 1951 in Middletown. Art kept his high spirited brothers and cousins in line, he was the fixer. He could smooth everything over. Art graduated from Middletown High School Class of 1969 and later proudly served in the US Army as a member of the Military Police. He joined the Newburgh Fire Dept, proudly served as president of IAFF 589, which led to a career with the NYS AFL CIO as the public employee director. He was an advocate for others- a tough negotiator, relentless in his support of worker’s rights. Upon retirement from AFL CIO, he started his own lobbyist firm where he continued to fight for ideals. He softened with age, and was the kindest, most generous person his family knew.
He is survived by his mother Shirley, and his wife Joann Turi-Wilcox at home; his son, Ryan of Los Angeles, CA, daughter Dr. Amy Voigt and husband Chris of New Orleans; his stepchildren, Cory Rosen, Dustin Rosen and his wife Michelle and Cassidy Turi; four brothers, William and his wife Jody of Middletown, Randy and his wife Pauline of Bloomingburg, Nelson and his girlfriend Jan of Goshen, and Peter and his wife Victoria of Pine Bush; his brother-in-law Joseph Myers and his wife Kathleen and cousin Patty Mitchell. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, C.J. and Chris, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 pm on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Service of remembrance will be held at 10 am on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow in the family plot in Hillside Cemetery in Middletown, NY.
