ARNOLD J TOWNSEND JR

Arnold J. Townsend, Jr., Albany, NY died (September 9, 2017 at the Saratoga Springs Hospital). He was of sound mind and did not suffer. He was working on his 98th year born on August 27, 1920 in Middletown, NY. He was the son of Arnold J Townsend Sr. and Mabel A (Brandhurst) Townsend. He was a graduate of Middletown High School and the University of New York at Morrisville. He retired to Fort Pierce, Fl in 1982 with the love of his life, Mary E (Bette Pierce) Townsend. They were married for sixty-six years prior to her passing in 2010. Both were members of the Presbyterian Church in Middletown, Fort Pierce, and Albany.

Prior to retirement, Arnold worked in Sales Management for a National Manufacturer, American Chain & Cable Co., and spent the last twenty years of his business career as a principal-owner of Wall-Townsend Inc. a national manufacturer’s agency. He received the Award of Merit in recognition for contributions to the national advancement of the Garden Supply and Power Equipment Industry.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940 and served with the 1st Marine Division starting with the Guadalcanal Campaign, the first land operation of WW II. He was awarded a battlefield commission for the Cape Gloustar, New Britain Campaign serving as a platoon sergeant. He retired from the Marines in 1957 to inactive reserve status with the rank of Captain. He was awarded full retirement in 2005. Arnold was a Life Member of the following Associations: National Order of Battlefield Commissions, Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, Marine Corps League, First Marine Division, Military Officers of America, The American Legion, and the B.P.O.E. Elks serving as Trustee and Treasurer in the Fort Pierce, Fl Lodge.

He was Past President of the following Associations: AARP Fort Pierce Chapter, Indian Hills Golf & Country Club Ft. Pierce, Colonnades Condominium Ft. Pierce, and the Beltrone Living Center Residents in Colonie, NY. He was past member Board of Directors at Orange County Country Club, Middletown, NY, and past Secretary Board of Directors at Vista Plantation, Vero Beach, FL. He served as Commandant of the Marine Corps League Detachment in Vero Beach and Judge Advocate of the Marine Corps League O’Brien Detachment in Albany, NY.

He was a Charter Member of the WW II Memorial Society and the American Hardware Manufacturers Assoc. 40 & Under Club. He was past member of the Hoffman Masonic Lodge, the Excelsior Hook & Ladder Fire Company both in Middletown, NY, and the Eastern Hardware Golf Assoc., The Keystoners Club of Pennsylvania, The Nutmeggers Club of Connecticut, Hardware Assoc. of Georgia, and the Wholesale Distributors Assoc. of Texas.

Arnold is survived by his sons Arnold J Townsend III, and Robert E. Townsend and his wife Alice, his daughter-in-law Nancy Townsend and his grandchildren: Megan, Kate, Denise, and Renae Townsend; greatgrandchildren Drew, Grady, and Paxton Townsend; his niece Francine Green and her husband Larry and his nephew Norbury Chambers and his wife Dottie.

A Memorial visitation will be from 12 to 12:30 pm on Wednesday, October 11 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave, Middletown, NY. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 pm at the funeral home, followed by burial with military honors in the family plot in Phillipsburg (Wallkill) Cemetery in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Arnold J Townsend.
