Ansel Raymond "Ray" Marks age 90, of Middletown, NY passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Born on October 9, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of Reuben and Gertrude (Luber) Marks. He married Frances Lucille Carpenter MS, RN on June 15, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY.
Ray, a loving husband and father, was predeceased by his wife, Frances and his brother Lewis. He is survived by his children; Stephen J. Marks, MD of Tarrytown NY; Ronald P. Marks of Kristianstad, Sweden, Leslie Graham Ritter, MS, RN and husband Matthew of Middletown, NY; step-daughter Kathleen Lynn Taylor of Key West, FL; cousin Ann (Marks) Lubinsky of Sunrise, FL; grandchildren Jordan and Avery Marks; Erik, Edward and Ellen Marks; Jillian (Graham) Lamberg and husband Jordan, Ian and Schyller Ritter; Shawn Barnett Sabatino, Jeremy and Simon Ray; 3 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Jane Andersen, niece Stephanie Marks, nephew Hon. Lawrence Marks, sister-in-law Barbara Traub and husband Marvin; close friends Hyacinth Reeves and Shirley Constant; and many colleagues, friends and cousins.
Ray graduated from Washington University, St Louis, MO, both for his baccalaureate and medical degrees, and from Pace University School of Law. He served in the Army, on both active duty and in the Reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. He was a member of multiple organizations including Phi Beta Kappa and the Society of Sigma Xi. Ray and his wife, Frances worked for the World Health Organization Care Medico, working in hospitals in Afghanistan, Indonesia and Columbia. Being a physician was his passion. He loved taking care of patients and no one was denied his care because of position, age, time of day or night. His accolades include becoming Chief of Staff and Board member of Horton Memorial Hospital and President of the Orange County Medical Society. For many years Ray served as Police Commissioner for the Middletown Police Department; an organization he had great respect for and a position he was honored to hold. He retired at the age of 82 from his position as Executive Secretary for the Board of the NYS DOH Office of Professional Medical Conduct. He loved his family, his country, animals, opera, and sports.
A Memorial Service will be held at Applebee McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. in Middletown, NY on January 26, 2019. Visitation will be from 12 to 1pm with a service to follow. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Middletown or an organization of your choice.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the many physicians, nurses and care givers from Crystal Run Health Care, Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown Park Manor and The Promenade of Middletown for their kindness and care.
Dr. Marks will continue to serve the medical community having donated his body to Washington University Medical School.
