Anna M. McKane

Anna M. McKane, a longtime and active member of the Middletown community, died following a long illness at Elant in Goshen . She was 85.

The daughter of the late Hormidas and Veronica Lavigne Lortie, she was born on July 15, 1924 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario , Canada . Always a caring and nurturing person, Anna studied nursing at St. Michael's School of Nursing in Toronto . Anna moved to the Middletown area in 1948, where she met her husband Charles. They were married on October 18, 1956 in New York City . She was a dedicated registered nurse at Horton Memorial Hospital in Middletown for over 40 years and a member of the American Nursing Association.

During the 1960 and 70s, Anna was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church where she sang in the choir, was a member of the PTA, and a den mother for Cub Pack #61.

She will be remembered fondly by family and friends for her pure spirit, great sense of humor and her thoughtful, giving nature. Her humble heart was full of love and she shared it with everyone. She was an avid reader; good cook and she loved to travel. She will also be remembered for her love of dogs. Anna was gifted in both knitting and embroidery. Most importantly, she adored her three children and was very proud of them. She also cherished her grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Grammy".

In addition to her loving husband of 53

years, Charles of Middletown; Anna is survived by her children, Charles McKane III and his wife Patricia of Warwick, , Ret. Lt. Col. Timothy M. McKane and his wife Peg of Levenworth, Kansas and Bridgid Garrison and her husband Robert of Westport, CT. She is also survived by her siblings, Dr. Paul Lortie and his wife Marjorie of Florida and Sr. Jean Marie Lortie of Minnesota; one sister-in-law Margaret Barone of Middletown; her seven beloved grandchildren, Daniel McKane of Warwick, Eileen McKane Watson of Kansas, Kelsey, Morgan, and Haley Garrison of Westport, Ct, and Kate and Joseph McKane of Kansas and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Rita Culnan and Jeanne Morrissey of Canada .

Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm today, Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue , Middletown , NY . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Avenue , Middletown , NY . Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph 's Cemetery, 149 Cottage Street , Middletown .

Memorial contributions in Anna's name may be made to the Middletown Humane Society, Bloomingburg Road , Middletown , NY 10940 .
