Obituary for Verna Patsy Sutherland
Verna Patsy Sutherland
Born April 26, 1947
Died February 2, 2018
Born in Panama on April 26, 1947, Verna was the daughter of the late Verna Levene and Cleveland O’Sullivan Sutherland. She was the sister of Silvia Forde, Sonia Bellamy, Tony Sutherland, Orlando Sutherland and Ingrid St. Croix. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Ceasar Sutherland. She leaves behind her siblings and lots of cousins, nephews and nieces.
Verna moved to the United States in 1967 at the age of twenty. Shortly thereafter, Verna began working at IBM as an Executive Secretary. After she retired from IBM in 1999, she relocated to Middletown, NY.
Verna started studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1968, and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1970. Verna was zealous in her ministry, and she always supported the weekend field service with her congregation. Over the years she conducted several Bible studies, one of which she conducted with her sister, Ingrid, who was later baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Verna always looked for opportunities to share spiritual truths from the Bible with her family members. Over the years, she would preach to her siblings (Silvia, Sonia and Tony).
In her early years of sacred service, Verna was very active in supporting and encouraging others in the congregation. She was always concerned with the welfare of the elderly ones and she went above and beyond to coordinate balanced recreation for the friends.
Over the years, her appreciation for the brotherhood grew to such a profound level that it moved her to visit other countries, such as Kenya and the Ivory Coast. These visits motivated her to learn Swahili and to serve as an interpreter while attending one of the local conventions in Africa. For many years, Verna would often talk fondly about her experiences in Africa, and on many occasions, she would share her amazing pictures through slide presentations to the friends in the congregation.
Her faith in the resurrection hope and the promise of living forever in the New World was something that she firmly and faithfully believed.
