Obituary for Thomas J. Darcy
Thomas J. Darcy
April 6, 1942-August 15, 2017
Midddletown, NY

Thomas J. Darcy, husband of Kathleen McConnell Darcy, lifelong resident of Middletown, NY, died peacefully on August 15, 2017 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He was born on April 6, 1942 in Middletown, the third child of Patrick and Josephine Darcy. Since 2005 Thomas was the sole practitioner of Thomas J. Darcy Law Office located at 20 Robert St., Middletown, NY. Prior to 2005 he practiced law with Wilmot Decker as part of the law firm, Decker and Darcy.
Thomas graduated from Middletown High School in 1960 where he excelled in all areas of endeavor. Upon graduation he attended Orange County Community College. In 1962 he won admission to New York University. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic fraternity and would go on to graduate summa cum laude with a degree in history. He was also the recipient of the prestigious NYU Founder’s Day Award. Upon graduation in 1964 Thomas was awarded a full tuition scholarship to the New York University School of Law from which he graduated in 1967. Soon after, he was admitted to the Orange County Bar Association of which he would remain a member for the rest of his life. Following the completion of compulsory military service, Thomas commenced a legal career that would last more than thirty years and would come to include serving as a justice of the peace in the Town of Mt. Hope from 1989-1998.
On March 8, 1969 he was married in Manhattan at the Church of the Immaculate Conception to Kathleen McConnell of Parkchester in the Bronx, NY. They would remain married for forty eight years and have three children and five grandchildren. Thomas remained involved in the Church of his baptism, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, where he first received the sacraments and served as an altar boy throughout his childhood. In later years he served as Lector and Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His service to the community included serving on the board of directors of the Pro-Life organization Birthright. He also participated in the Middletown University Club, and served on the Board of Directors of Hillside Cemetery.
Thomas will be remembered for his friendly manner, compassion, and sense of humor. He inherited from his father a keen appetite for jokes and witty stories. He was as generous with his smile as he was with his advice. He loved the communities to which he belonged, and won the admiration of those he served. He was eager to receive the good things offered to him by life, and to share them gratefully with those he met. He leaves behind a legacy of good works and acts of love, and these go before him as he enters God’s kingdom.
Thomas is survived by his wife Kathleen McConnell Darcy and his three sons, Paul, Michael, and Joseph. Paul is married to Cynthia Urbin Darcy with whom he has two daughters, Elizabeth and Kathryn. Michael was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 2002 and lives in Pittsburgh, PA where he is a member of the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri. Joseph is married to Kathryn Prizio Darcy of Tustin, CA. Together they have three sons, Colin, Ryan, and Owen. Thomas delighted in the affection of his grandchildren.
Thomas is also survived by his two sisters, Patricia M. Darcy and Alice J. Holland, wife of James Holland, whose daughter Deirdre Holland Walsh is wife of Patrick Walsh and mother to Ciaran, Aidan, Declan, and Fiona.
