Rita Sorice, beloved mother and grandmother, died after a courageous and hard fought battle with a cancer on August 7, 2017 at Orange Regional Medical Center with her loving family by her side. She was 70. The daughter of the late Antonio and Maria Carmina Palma, she was born on July 13, 1947 in Naples, Italy.
She married Felice Sorice on July 11, 1965 in Italy. Rita and Felice immigrated to the United States from Italy with their young children. They worked hard, building a life for their family. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed carrying on their traditions.
Rita was a gifted gardener, who kept a spectacular garden filled with both vegetables and flowers. Her garden was a showplace that much of her community (even members of the Garden Club) enjoyed.
Rita is survived by her children: daughter, Francesca Berlin and her husband, Michael; son, Antonio Sorice and his wife, Sharon; son, Pellegrino Sorice; and daughter, Carmella Vega and her husband, David. She is also survived by a her brother, Pietro and sister, Rafaella Palma, both of Italy and sister, Giovanna Palma of England; as well as her cherished grandchildren: Stephanie, Elizabeth, Phillip and Margaret Berlin; Nicholas and Catarina Sorice; and David Vega Jr and Liam Vega; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff on 4 North at Orange Regional Medical Center, Dr. Robert Dinsmore and his staff, ORMC Spagnoli Family Cancer Center and the Smilow Cancer Hospital.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2017 in St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Entombment will follow in Queen of Peace Mausoleum at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Rita’s family would like to request memorial contributions in her name to be made to specific charities to benefit cancer research.
